Question 1

What are the biggest festivals?

Accepted Answer

Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián fills Old San Juan every January, Carnaval de Ponce takes over the south in February, and Noche de San Juan brings beach bonfires on June 23. The Christmas season runs from late November through Three Kings' Day on January 6.

Question 2

Do I need to rent a car?

Accepted Answer

Not for San Juan — Old San Juan, Condado and Isla Verde are walkable and ride-hail is easy. For everything beyond the metro (El Yunque, the west coast, the south), a car gives you far more freedom, because public transit outside San Juan is limited.

Question 3

Is Puerto Rico safe for visitors?

Accepted Answer

The places travelers spend time — Old San Juan, Condado, Isla Verde, the east coast and most island routes — are generally safe. Violent crime is concentrated in specific neighborhoods, so use the judgment you'd use in any U.S. city: keep valuables out of sight, stay in lit areas at night, and leave nothing in a parked car at a beach or trailhead.

Question 4

What local food should I try first?

Accepted Answer

Mofongo — green plantain mashed with garlic and topped with pork, shrimp or vegetables. After that: lechón asado, alcapurrias, bacalaítos, pastelillos, arroz con gandules and a mallorca for breakfast. The piña colada was invented in San Juan, so that counts too.

Question 5

What currency do they use?

Accepted Answer

The U.S. dollar. There's no local currency and nothing to exchange — U.S. bills and coins are what you'll spend everywhere.

Question 6

Is Puerto Rico part of the United States?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so a trip here is domestic travel: the currency is the U.S. dollar, mail moves at USPS rates, and federal law applies. The island has its own elected government, and its residents are U.S. citizens.

Question 7

How do the bookable experiences work?

Accepted Answer

The tours, sails and adventures listed on this site are booked through Viator, a Tripadvisor company and the largest marketplace for experiences worldwide. You book and pay on Viator — we may earn a commission, which never changes your price.

Question 8

When is the best time to visit?

Accepted Answer

December through April brings the most reliable beach weather — and the highest prices. May through November is greener, cheaper and warmer, with short afternoon showers rather than all-day rain.

Question 9

What is hurricane season?

Accepted Answer

June 1 to November 30, with the busiest stretch from mid-August through October. Most trips pass without incident, but if you travel in those months, watch the forecast and consider travel insurance.

Question 10

What's the emergency number?

Accepted Answer

911, the same as the mainland, and it works from any phone on the island.

Question 11

Do I need to book ahead?

Accepted Answer

For the popular ones, yes. El Yunque hikes, bioluminescent bay kayaking, catamaran sails and anything heading to Culebra or Vieques sell out days — sometimes weeks — ahead in high season.

Question 12

Is Puerto Rico welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Same-sex marriage is legal, and San Juan — especially Condado and Santurce — has a long-established LGBTQ+ scene with bars, clubs and events year-round.

Question 13

Where do locals actually eat?

Accepted Answer

Roadside. Guavate in the mountains for lechón, Piñones near San Juan for frituras and beachside kiosks, and the Luquillo kiosks on the east coast — this is the chinchorro cooking the island is known for.

Question 14

Can I use credit cards?

Accepted Answer

Cards are accepted almost everywhere in San Juan, and at hotels, restaurants and tour operators island-wide. Carry some cash for roadside kiosks, market stalls and small chinchorros, which are often cash-only.

Question 15

Is Uber available?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it's the simplest way around the San Juan metro, including the airport, Old San Juan and Condado. Coverage thins out outside the metro, so don't count on it for a day trip across the island.

Question 16

Do I need a passport to visit Puerto Rico?

Accepted Answer

U.S. citizens don't — Puerto Rico counts as domestic travel, so a state ID or driver's license is enough for the flight. Travelers from other countries need the same U.S. visa or ESTA authorization required to enter the mainland.

Question 17

What is a chinchorro?

Accepted Answer

An informal, often roadside eatery — open-air, no fuss, sometimes just a grill and a few tables. They serve some of the best criollo food on the island, usually at the lowest prices.

Question 18

Which airport should I fly into?

Accepted Answer

Luis Muñoz Marín International (SJU) near San Juan takes most flights and lands you 15–20 minutes from Old San Juan and Condado. Rafael Hernández (BQN) in Aguadilla serves the west coast, and Mercedita (PSE) in Ponce serves the south.

Question 19

What language is spoken on the island?

Accepted Answer

Spanish is the everyday language. English is also official and widely spoken in hotels, airports, tour offices and tourist areas. A few words of Spanish — buenos días, gracias, la cuenta, por favor — go a long way.

Question 20

Can I cancel a booking?

Accepted Answer

Most Viator experiences offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time, though some small-group and specialty tours have stricter terms. The exact policy for your tour is shown before you pay.

Question 21

Do I need any vaccinations?

Accepted Answer

No vaccines are required to enter Puerto Rico. Routine U.S. vaccinations are recommended, and dengue fever is present on the island, so pack mosquito repellent for dawn and dusk.

Question 22

Is the ocean warm enough to swim all year?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sea temperatures sit around 79–84°F (26–29°C) year-round, so swimming, snorkeling and diving are comfortable in any month.

Question 23

What's the local etiquette?

Accepted Answer

Greet people when you walk into a shop or restaurant — buenos días or buenas tardes — and expect meals to be unhurried; nobody will rush you out. Island time is real here, and patience gets you further than urgency.

Question 24

How much should I tip?

Accepted Answer

The mainland U.S. standard: 15–20% at restaurants, a dollar or two per drink at a bar, and a few dollars a day for housekeeping. Tour guides and boat crews usually get 10–15%.

Question 25

What should I know about Old San Juan?

Accepted Answer

It's a 500-year-old walled city — the oldest continuously inhabited city under the U.S. flag — with two forts (El Morro and San Cristóbal), blue cobblestone streets and real hills. Wear proper shoes, start early before the heat, and park in one of the garages on the edge of the old city.

Question 26

What's the drinking age?

Accepted Answer

18. Photo ID is required to buy alcohol, and it's enforced more strictly here than in some U.S. states.

Question 27

Do I need a reservation for El Yunque?

Accepted Answer

Entry to El Yunque National Forest is free, but timed reservations are required for the main recreation area (through Recreation.gov) and the popular slots go early. It's about 45 minutes from San Juan, it rains often and the trails are steep — start early, bring a light rain shell and wear shoes with grip.

Question 28

What time zone is Puerto Rico in?

Accepted Answer

Atlantic Standard Time (UTC−4) all year. The island doesn't observe daylight saving, so in summer it shares the clock with the U.S. East Coast, and in winter it runs one hour ahead of it.

Question 29

Are all beaches public?

Accepted Answer

Yes. In Puerto Rico the shoreline up to the high-water mark is public and resorts can't block access to it. Beachfront hotels may have their own chairs and service, but the sand itself is open to everyone.

Question 30

Is Puerto Rico expensive?

Accepted Answer

It runs close to a mid-size U.S. city. Resorts and Old San Juan are the priciest corners, while roadside food, local bakeries and markets are a bargain. Rates climb in high season, December through April.

Question 31

What if I get sick or need a pharmacy?

Accepted Answer

Hospitals and clinics are modern, and the major U.S. pharmacy chains have locations in the San Juan metro. If you're visiting from the mainland, check your insurance's coverage for care outside your home state before you travel.

Question 32

How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

Accepted Answer

Taxis and ride-hail both pick up at SJU, and the ride to Old San Juan, Condado or Isla Verde is short — roughly 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic and your exact hotel.

Question 33

What does “Ya tú sabes” mean?

Accepted Answer

Roughly “you already know” — the phrase Puerto Ricans use when something goes without saying. It's also the name of this guide, which is all about the island the way locals know it.

Question 34

Is it safe to swim?

Accepted Answer

At most beaches, yes — but many have no lifeguards, and currents on parts of the north and east coast can be strong. Swim at public balnearios or busy lifeguarded beaches, stay out of the water at dusk and after heavy rain, and follow any warning flags.

Question 35

How do I get to Vieques or Culebra?

Accepted Answer

Ferries leave from the terminal in Ceiba on the east coast, and small planes fly from San Juan (Isla Grande) and Ceiba in under half an hour. Book ferry seats online ahead, and reserve well in advance if you want to bring a car — many travelers go as foot passengers and rent a jeep or golf cart on the island.

Question 36

What plugs and voltage should I expect?

Accepted Answer

The same as the mainland U.S.: 120 volts, 60 Hz, and standard flat two- and three-prong outlets. U.S. devices plug straight in — no adapter needed.

Question 37

Is the tap water safe to drink?

Accepted Answer

Yes — public water is treated to U.S. EPA standards. Many locals still prefer filtered or bottled water, especially after heavy rain or a storm, and bottled water is easy to find.

Question 38

Can I visit a bioluminescent bay?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Puerto Rico has three: Mosquito Bay on Vieques, Laguna Grande in Fajardo and La Parguera in Lajas. Plan around a new moon for the brightest glow, and go with a permitted kayak or boat operator; swimming rules vary by bay.

Question 39

Are ATMs easy to find?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in cities and tourist areas, and most U.S. bank cards work at them. Banks are open on weekdays — keep a little cash on hand for small vendors.

Question 40

Is it easy to drive around the island?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Puerto Rico is about 100 miles long and 35 miles wide, with toll highways connecting most of it. Distances are in miles, gas is sold by the gallon, a U.S. driver's license is valid, and tolls are collected electronically.

Question 41

Are there vegetarian and vegan options?

Accepted Answer

Plenty, especially in San Juan, Santurce and Condado. Ask for mofongo without pork or chicharrón, and look for the island's juice bars, health-food spots and farmers' markets.

Question 42

Is the coffee really that good?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Puerto Rico grows and roasts its own beans, and a café con leche or cortado from a local toaster is one of the island's small pleasures.
