The Morning Starts Here
Coffee, bread, a counter seat and the particular pleasure of discovering where a neighborhood begins its day.
Before Puerto Rico gets loud, there is coffee.
Morning in Puerto Rico has its own soundtrack: a metal gate rolling open, a coffee machine starting up, traffic beginning to build and somebody already talking about what they are going to eat.
Breakfast does not have to be elaborate. Coffee and bread can be enough. A neighborhood bakery can be better.
Look for the places that feel connected to the block around them. People coming in for something familiar. Employees who already know the order. A pastry disappearing from the case before you have decided whether you wanted it.
In Río Piedras, mornings can feel especially local because the neighborhood is tied to students, workers, families and small businesses moving at different speeds.
That is the pleasure of a Puerto Rican morning: you do not need an itinerary. You just need to walk into somewhere that looks busy and see what everybody else is having.
Start there. The rest of the day usually follows.
